haiku after the earthquake

an old man waits for rescue
bodies deep below the debris
weather alarms break silence

*

(lost slipper
chipped tea cup
uneven horizon)

*

earth rocks calm waters
wind tense with worry
red sun stays center

*

(death tolls
like temple bells
heavy with snow)

*

people resigned to ruins
meek in their hopes for order:
smooth stones, raked sand, empty space
